Porsche Motorsport – Le Mans Series, Round 2 Preview
Posted on 04. May, 2009 by PB in 911
Round two of the Le Mans Series promises to be another thrilling encounter. Porsche works drivers Marc Lieb (Germany) and Richard Lietz (Austria), who won the GT2 class at the season-opener in Barcelona with their Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, are eager to secure their second win and increase their lead in the championship. This is guaranteed to be a great race as always at the demanding Spa-Francorchamps 7.004 kilometre track.
Another team running Porsche's on Sunday are the Felbermayr-Proton team, who run a couple of 911 GT3 RSR cars in the near-standard GT2 class. With Marc Lieb and Richard Lietz’s win in Barcelona, the German squad had a perfect start to the season. Hence, Marc Lieb travels to Spa-Francorchamps feeling rather optimistic.
“Winning did me the world of good,” says Lieb. “But straight afterwards we concentrated totally on Spa. We still have a lot of potential in the set-up of our updated car, and that’s what we want to tap fully at the second race. We were strong in Belgium last year where I secured second and now with the further developed tyres from Michelin we’re looking even better. Apart from that, Spa is one of my favourite race tracks!” And ours too Mr Lieb...ours too!
The 3 drivers in the 2nd Felbermayr 911 are Horst Felbermayr Jr. (Austria), Christian Ried (Germany) and Francisco Cruz Martins (Portugal).
The IMSA Performance Matmut team are also racing a 911 GT3 RSR on Sunday, to complete a very strong Porsche presence in Belgium. Porsche works driver Patrick Pilet and Raymond Narac (both French) were running in 2nd place in the 1st round when they unfortunately were forced to retire and are well up for the challenge at this even with Pilet quoted as saying - “We now want to do everything in our power to make amends,”
Sundays 1,000k race in Spa-Francorchamps starts at 12.50 hours and runs over 143 laps or maximum six hours. Bring it on!!! Looking forward to catching the highlights on Mobile 1 - The Grid, and keep your eye out for some you-tube action as well as I'll get some videos links posted.

Fast and Tricky. That’s the only description I can give this track. Go Lieb! You can do it!

The season opener was fantastic. It was amazing how Lieb and Lietz was able to catch up after being left behind in the first hour. For sure, round 2 will be superb!

I read that they were able to catch up because of the Porsche’s low fuel consumption. They were able to make 2 more laps over the competition. The Porsche just keeps getting better and better.

Well – what a great result for Porsche!
Team Felbermayr-Proton’s Porsche 997 GT3 RS, driven by Marc Lieb and Richard Lietz crossed the line first, followed by three Ferraris.
Plus – The Porsche RS Spyder is back at the top of the LMP2 class.
Anyone there? Must have been great to watch!
