Porsche Cayenne Diesel: Ultimate Combination of VW Mechanics & Porsche Style
Posted on 14. Apr, 2009 by PB in Cayenne
The diesel era has set in and Porsche is all geared up to bring out its Cayenne Diesel 3.0 in style. This tractor car is not only about having a good looking Porsche body, but Porsche has also gone all environmentally friendly on us (if you think diesel is cleaner!) by bringing out the Cayenne Diesel. The combination of the Cayenne body with Volkswagen's diesel engine is actually a pretty good combination.
The launch of Cayenne 3.0 not only sets true the promises made by Porsche, but also places Porsche in hybrid segment delivering petrol and diesel models in 4x4 segments. Although the Cayenne uses the same diesel unit as used in the VW Touareg, the engine capacity is not 5.0 litre V10. Rather, Cayenne has the smallest capacity engine powered with 3.0 litre V6 turbo diesel engine.
What's great about Cayenne 3.0?
The diesel Cayenne is expected to beat the base Cayenne's 21.0 mpg figure. The performance of the Cayenne diesel is supposed to be around the 30.0 mpg mark, which for a car this size, is actually pretty good. The car has tank size that can take up to 26.4 gallons of devils juice, meaning more then enough to take you on a jolly round your country pile - with just one refill. The Cayenne 3.0 is a 4 wheel drive and runs through six-speed Tiptronic S transmission. This diesel car promises top speed of 133 mph and 0-62 mph within just 8.3 seconds.
The Add-Ons
The aging Cayenne has a new battle to fight with its diesel mode.l Cayenne Diesel has an aluminum based cylinder heads, a cast-iron made crankcase, twin intercoolers, a shaft to control the vibration caused due to the tall compression ratio. The car's engine noise can be kept under control through the laminated acoustic windscreen fit in the engine. The most exciting aspects of this Porsche diesel are most definitely its fuel economy, reduced emission and quiet cruising. However, like any other Cayenne, it's looks are really a matter of taste. It's still the Marmite of the Porsche range - you either love it or hate it.
Another feature of this V6 engine is its gas recirculation system. The engine has advance piezo units that help in direct injection of common rail. The presence of a standardised diesel part filter device helps the engine to reduce emission of Co2 by almost 21%. Good news in current times I'm sure you will agree.
This diesel car also offers 405 lb-ft of torque that revolves at a speed of 2,000 to 2,500 rpm. The horsepower then takes over the torque at speed of 4,000 to 4,400 rpm. The strongest aspect of Cayenne diesel is its efficient cruising capability clubbed with a commanding thrust from a stop. The diesel unit has great low end torque and fairly pulls away from a standstill.
The relatively silent ride that you would have in the Porsche Cayenne diesel will make it hard for you to believe that the engine is actually running at 750 rpm., whilst burning the black stuff and Porsche have done a great job on this.
So, the release of the first diesel model from Porsche has not only set in with Cayenne, but it is simply changing the trend in automobiles sector by making them turn towards fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.
I think this is another shrewed move from Dr. Ing. hc F.
