The American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón used the 59th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Presented by Fresh From Florida to unveil the Porsche Panamera Turbo as the official safety vehicle of the series. Carrying a 4.8-liter, twin turbocharged V8 with 500 horsepower, the Panamera Turbo will be perfectly suited to handle any track situation, including inclement weather, thanks to PDK and PTM active all-wheel drive. With a 0-60 mph time of just four seconds and a top speed of 188 mph, the Panamera Turbo could blend in seamlessly with the ALMS grid. Producing some of the best economy numbers and lowest CO2 emissions in its class, the Panamera even stays true to the Series’ Global Leader in Green Racing message. “ Unlike its competitors, the Panamera is not based on the platform of a previous existing model or merely a highly tuned version of a sibling model. The Panamera has been built from the ground up to provide Porsche driving dynamics and performance while simultaneously surrounding its occupants in luxury and comfort.

MotorTrend’s Announcement of 2011 Porsche Cayenne as SUV of the Year Showcases Growing Importance of Social Media

Just last week, the internet was abuzz about Porsche banning a large portion of their employees from accessing Facebook ( see article ). Citing security and industrial espionage fears, the sports car manufacturer blocked access for most European employees. In what could be an attempt to get even more publicity (I’m just speculating here), MotorTrend, a publication primarily known as a print magazine, announced the 2011 Porsche Cayenne as winner of their highly coveted SUV of the Year Award… on Facebook! Oh, the irony!! MotorTrend was quick to follow-up the Facebook announcement with another online post to their own web-site including the video above (if you’re viewing this post via email you may need to visit PorschePurist.com to see the video). The post and video detail the judging process and why the Cayenne was selected. In a nutshell, the Cayenne was judged to be the best in the following six key categories: Engineering Excellence Advancement in Design Efficiency Safety Value Performance of Intended Function While the method of announcement shouldn’t overshadow the achievement – The Porsche Cayenne IS MotorTrend’s 2011 SUV of the Year – it does highlight the growing importance of Facebook, other social media, and the role of non-traditional media in general. Introducing the 2011 Porsche Cayenne

Porsche has always been a name commonly associated with top of the line, high performance sports cars. With Porsche’s introduction of the Cayenne in recent years, they’ve managed to create a new market for the car enthusiast. The Cayenne gives a sports car fanatic the speed, performance and look of a sports car along with the additional seating and cargo that an SUV provides. It’s the ideal vehicle for the sports car bachelor-turned-family-man or the housewife that’s anti-minivan.

With Porsche’s release of the 2011 Cayenne, Porsche now provides five versions of the vehicle, including the Cayenne, Cayenne Diesel, Cayenne S, Cayenne Turbo and the new Cayenne Hybrid released in 2011 for the first time. The new base level Cayenne starts at £41,404 and goes up to £81,589, depending on the options and trims chosen.

Lighter and Lower

In addition to introducing its hybrid version, Porsche has also modified the Cayenne into a new lighter, longer and lower version of the vehicle along with additional perks and features inside and out. With the five versions of the vehicle available, the buyer has options of a 300 horsepower 3.6L V6 engine in the base model, a mid range 400 horsepower 4.8 L V8 engine in the Cayenne S or the high performance 500 horsepower twin-turbocharged 4.8L V8 motor that the Cayenne Turbo offers. Buyers looking for performance along with fuel economy have the option between the Cayenne Diesel and Cayenne Hybrid.

Hybrid vs Diesel

The Cayenne S Hybrid offers the 333 horsepower Audi supercharged 3.0L V6 while the Cayenne Diesel offers a 3.0L diesel unit with 240 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque. While fuel economy has never been one of Porsche’s main concerns, its vastly improved its fuel economy not only with its diesel and hybrid versions but all across its 2011 models. The base Cayenne gets almost 24 mpg, the Cayenne S gets 22.4 mpg and the Turbo has an impressive mile per gallon improvement of 20.4 mpg combined.

Not surprisingly, the Cayenne Hybrid and Diesel versions have outstanding fuel economy. The hybrid version achieves up to 28.6 mpg and the diesel is not much lower at slightly over 25 mpg overall.

In addition to excellent fuel economy and the new Hybrid version, the new 2011 Cayenne has more ergonomic body lines, a redesigned interior, a larger wheel base and more cabin room. For starters, the interior of the Cayenne features a new steering wheel, a longer centre console, a repositioned shift-knob, vertical silver-trimmed air vents and an overall more modern look.
New Features

The exterior features rounder headlights resembling the Panamera, a three part lower grille that blends well with the LED daytime running lights and an overall sleeker appearance with more ergonomic lines.

It’s safe to say that, with the addition of a new, more environmentally friendly version of its SUV in addition to a sleeker, more sports car geared design, the Porsche enthusiast will not be disappointed. The new 2011 Cayenne is the perfect blend where the sports car meets the family SUV.

Deconstructing the Porsche Emblem

The Porsche name is recognized for superb styling on top of innovative engineering, but until 1952 the Stuttgart-based automotive manufacturer portrayed itself to the world as only that: a name. For 31 years, the Porsche brand consisted of seven sleek letters but had no face attached to its name. No mark, emblem, nor ideogram to distinguish its cars from the masses and therefore no burning scar in the minds of consumers embodying the Porsche experience and history. By the start of the 1950s, however, importers and agents who sold these high-performance sports cars made it clear to Porsche that their customers wanted something more. They wanted an emblem to identify their vehicles. Ferdinand Porsche, his son Ferry, and their trusted circle went about designing a logo that would represent Porsche to the world.

The mark they came up with takes more than a few pen strokes to reproduce, but nonetheless creates a bond of trust and space for thought among drivers and admirers alike. More than anything else, the Porsche logo takes its design cues from the coat of arms of the Free People’s State of Württemberg, a former Weimar Republic province. Ferdinand Porsche moved to Württemberg from Austria-Hungary after the turmoil of World War I and the Porsche headquarters is still located in the province (now called Baden-Württemberg) today. The red and black stripes come from the former province’s flag and the 6 antlers represent the heavy deer population in the thickly-wooded forests of the region. The province is the most prosperous and innovative of modern Germany and many other German multinationals are located there such as Daimler, Bosch, Carl Zeiss, and SAP. Through his company’s emblem, Porsche shows a firm commitment to his adopted land.

The horse in the middle is from the coat of arms of Stuttgart, the capital of Württemberg. Stute in German means female horse and gart in the city name is short for garten, or garden. The now bustling German metropolis was originally a horse pasture in the 10^th century. The city’s coat of arms pays homage to these roots with a black prancing stallion on a yellow shield. Interestingly enough, the Italian sports car manufacturer Ferrari uses the same heraldry in its logo. The image of the black stallion made its way to Italy during World War I via Francesco Baracca, Italy’s top fighter ace during the war. Legend has it that Baracca copied the horse design from a shot down German pilot who happened to have painted the Stuttgart coat of arms on his plane. The Italian used the symbol on his own plane, but he too was killed in combat. In 1923, the symbol made its way to Enzo Ferrari after Ferrari’s victory in the Circuito del Savio. Ferrari had made acquaintance with Baracca’s father and after he won the race, his wife, the Countess Paolina Baracca, presented a piece of her son’s Stuttgart coat of arms-emblazoned plane shrapnel to him. The Countess asked that he use the horse on his cars and suggested it would bring him good luck. The Porsche family asked the Stuttgart city government for permission to use their coat of arms in their logo, which they were granted, but it’s unknown whether Ferrari ever had to go through the same process. Austrian petrol station company Avanti also uses the same prancing black stallion with yellow background in their logo.

With the Porsche name added at the top of the shield, the emblem was complete. From 1953-1957 the new logo first appeared only on the interior of Porsche’s vehicles. The 1957 Porsche 356 coupe was the first to have the emblem gleam resplendent on its bonnet. A 2008 Luxury Institute survey among wealthy Americans found the Porsche brand best luxury car brand today. Respondents of the survey associated Porsche with "power, style and excitement", "value," "elegance," and "trust and respect". Without its intricate yet meaningful logo, it is doubtful Porsche would have ever been able to sear itself into the minds of consumers, built such value, and commanded such respect.

The Porsche 911 and your New Baby are Compatible!

It happens every day. One minute we are free to zip around in our Porsche and the next minute we are trying to figure out how to keep the Porsche and still transport the baby.

It didn’t used to be that way. Back in the old days people rode around in cars without seat belts, baby carriers and booster seats. Now we have to be tied into place. It’s not necessarily a bad thing. Unless you own a Porsche that you don’t want to sell and you have a baby to transport.

You have a few options. The first is to sell the Porsche and buy some sensible family car with a back seat and no sex appeal. Of course the Porsche probably helped get the baby in the first place so maybe instead of selling it you should consider a second car.

The reality is that you probably already have a second car. The one the other parent drives. So that base is covered. You have a car that you can ride around in safely. It’s not as fast or as sexy but it gets the job done.

But what do you do on the day that the other parent is gone with the car and you have to drive the baby someplace? The glib response is to say call a taxi. But wait, Porsche has solved this problem for you!

The wonderful designers at Porsche anticipated this problem, as they have so many others when they created our magnificent cars. Porsche has actually designed a car seat that is designed to fit into their cars!

The Porsche car seat is designed to fit securely into the passenger seat and will actually disable the passenger airbag when it locks into place. It’s the perfect solution to the problem of a car seat in a Porsche.

Now you can relax. You don’t have to give up your Porsche 911 just because you have a baby. Get a Porsche car seat and your baby can ride along while you teach him (or her) how to handle those envious looks from less impressive cars with grace!

It’s hard to be humble when you drive a Porsche. But for the sake of your baby please try!

Free Tour of the Porsche Panamera and Cayenne Production Lines

Plan on traveling to Germany soon? With production starting in the newly remodeled Leipzig plant of Porsche AG, the facility is once again open to the public for tours. Visitors now have the opportunity to see the all new Panamera rolling off the assembly line prior to the official launch this coming September.

Gold Plated Porsche Cayenne

As if the Cayenne doesn’t get flamed enough as it is, someone had to go and throw gold fuel on the already burning fire. To date, I’ve seen “ murdered out” Porsches (flat black), Porsches covered in camouflage , 911s covered in Tweed and other things that defy description , but this is the first time I’ve seen a Cayenne completely covered in gold foil (including the wheels). I know I’m going out on a limb here, but I kind of like this

Porsche chose Auto Shanghai 2009 for the world premiere of the brand new Panamera. This unique four-door Gran Turismo appeared among 15 iconic Porsche cars on a state-of-the-art exhibition stand, where guests also witnessed the Asia premiere of Cayenne GTS Porsche Design Edition III, alongside the national debut of the Cayenne S Transsyberia.
