Porsche’s Irresistible Success in the USA

Porsche’s Irresistible Success in the USA

It was exactly 60 years ago, in the autumn on 1950, that the first Porsche cars were shipped to the United States to be sold. Porsche, at that time, was a small producer of sports cars based in Stuttgart, Germany. Since then, the Porsche brand has risen to become one of the most beloved, if not the most beloved, brands of sports cars in North America, venerated for its aesthetically pleasing, high-performance vehicles. Little boys dream about one day driving Porsches, people ogle them on the streets and Hollywood stars buy them as status symbols.

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS is the Best Driver’s Car in the world, according to Autocar magazine.

The GT3 topped a list of 11 supercars, worth over £1,000,000 collectively, to take the top award. Staff at the magazine took the top sports cars out for a spin on the Donington race track to find the best driving car and all seven judges placed the Porsche 911 GT3 RS top of the list.

Chas Hallet, editor of Autocar, said: “The Porsche 911 GT3 RS was a clear winner; each of our seven judges placed the car at the top of their list.

“On the day of our road track testing at Donington, the GT3 RS’ drive was simply the most involving, enjoyable and satisfying of all the sports cars involved.”

Binning the 911…and regretting it.

Owning a Porsche 911 was something that I had dreamt about for years. I remember being at school, aged 12, and watching a friend’s father pull up in a 1992, 964 Turbo. For my innocent, sheltered eyes it looked simply incredible, like nothing else, with its huge fin, frog-like headlamps and flared arches. My father had only ever had company, BMW 5 series when I was growing up; comfortable, dependable and enough space to haul the family down to the Dordogne for summer holidays.

As a 12 year old gawping at my chum’s Porsche, I could not understand how anyone could have this car AND have children. The concept of self-reward and the ability to run multiple cars for one’s enjoyment were too much for my young mind to process. I just thought cars were bought to transport families to and from school and family engagements. The concept of owning a specific car just for its sheer power, performance and road-handling was alien to me. I thought one day, if I worked hard enough, I might be able to emulate my father and get behind the wheel of a sturdy German saloon – but be in a position to have the famous Porsche shield dangling from my keys? Never.

Porsche 918 Spyder: A Sports Car Aficionado’s Dream

Porsche 918 Spyder: A Sports Car Aficionado’s Dream

We check out the new Porsche 918 Spyder as it lives up to founder Ferdinand Porsche’s vision to design moving works of art that are the antithesis of the tanks he built during the big war. In fact in a strange metaphoric way the 918 Spyder is a twenty-first century version of Ferdinand’s first design, the Volkswagen beetle.

The Porsche 918 Spyder is sports car aficionado’s dream, but we may have to wait to get one. The first 1,000 Spyder’s are spoken for, but that may work in our favour. It will give the rest of us time to see the flaws and to save enough to put a down payment on a used one.

Porsche Power and the Adrenaline Rush in the Fast Lane

Thinking of the power of a Porsche 911 conjures up images of the metal-ripping, tyre-squealing car chase scenes from the ’80s classic film ‘No Man’s Land’.

The highlight of the movie is a 7-minute car chase, which packs quite a punch. The scene begins with a sense of reckless anticipation, as friends Ted and Benjy, played by Charlie Sheen and BD Sweeney, smoothly carjack a silver 911 Porsche from a basement car park of a shopping mall. As they make for the exit, a red Boxster catches Ted’s eye. Five seconds later, he is in the process of ripping off the soft-top hood when his enemies spot him from across the car park.

What happened in journalist Peter Cheney’s garage was any parent’s nightmare. Peter Cheney is an automotive journalist who writes for the Globe and Mail, a Canadian news publication. Peter frequently test drives automobiles and writes reviews of his experience driving the cars. Recently, Cheney was given an opportunity to take home a Porsche 911 Turbo, valued at $180,000. Cheney was supposed to keep the car for a few days so that he could write a full review of the luxury automobile’s performance and handling. Ideally, he was supposed to return the vehicle in one piece.

Instead, Peter came home to find his garage in shambles and the Porsche badly damaged. Read on for the full story and photos!
